Today, the Environmental Agency of Abu Dhabi (EAD) announced the successful rescue and rehabilitation of Malquot the dugong. After being separated from his mother in 2019 and stranded, EAD deployed a team of specialists, which included Worldwide Zoo Consultants (WZC) aquatic mammal experts to assess the situation. There are very few other known cases of a calf surviving separation from their mother at such an early age. Malquot was successfully rescued and relocated to a specialized facility in Abu Dhabi where a team of trainers and veterinarians from WZC nursed him back to health. Today, nearly 4 years old, Malquot is thriving and in excellent condition. Tommy Wilken, CEO of Worldwide Zoo Consultants said, “Our team of professionals spent countless hours, including nearly 6 months of constant hands-on care and we could not be more proud of the results and also to have such a supportive partner in EAD. This is a tremendous success story and Malquot is truly an ambassador for the conservation of his species”. Dugongs are classified as Vulnerable to extinction by the IUCN.
