Assistant Animal Care Specialists

As an Assistant Animal Care Specialist, you will be responsible for the safeguarding, well-being and welfare of our animal residents. Your primary responsibilities encompass the attentive care of all animals entrusted to the facility, the meticulous maintenance of their habitats, and fostering a positive team approach within the project.

  1. Animal Care:
  • Provide daily care and husbandry for a variety of animal species within our facility.
  • Ensure that all animals receive proper nutrition, enrichment, and medical attention as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment for our animal residents.
  • Compliance with health and safety standards in accordance with local municipality rules and regulations.
  • Provide animal care and ensure habitats meet compliance of facility-specific policies and procedures.
  • Perform daily animal husbandry tasks, health checks, animal behaviour observation, and training.
  • Perform duties to reduce loss/waste, control costs and accurately communicate expenses.
  • Observe animals to detect illnesses and injuries and notify the Animal Collection Supervisors and Veterinarian of the findings.

2. Record Keeping:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of animal health, behaviour, and environmental conditions.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports for regulatory compliance and management review.
  • Undertake daily operations within the Life Sciences Department to ensure the project is operating correctly.
  • Undertake daily collection and analysis of animal samples and routine checks to ensure all procedures are adhered to within established parameters.

3. Enrichment and Observation:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of enrichment programs to promote the mental and physical well-being of our animals.
  • Conduct behavioural observations to monitor and assess the animals’ health and behaviour.

4. Visitor Engagement:

  • Engage with visitors and provide information about the animals and their conservation needs.
  • Answer questions and contribute to the educational experience of our guests.

5. Team Collaboration:

  • Work collaboratively with other animal care sta to ensure seamless operations.
  • Assist in maintaining proper inventory levels of food and supplies.
  • Undertake daily operations within the Projects Department to ensure the highest level of safety, courtesy, education, e iciency and operational readiness always.
  • Communicate to Animal Collection Supervisors and veterinary sta about any animal health concerns to develop and implement a care and treatment plan.
  • Compliance of all policy and procedure documents.
  • Assist in emergency situations to minimize damage, loss or injury to guests, team members, animals or company property.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • 2-3 years + experience with animal husbandry and animal training required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Competency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Creative problem solver.
